Authenticating Card Boxes Contain Advertised Contents

AUTHENTICATING THAT PRODUCTS
MEET AS-ADVERTISED CRITERIA

Industrial CT scanning can be used to authenticate that products contain the as-advertised requirements. This $450 box of Shohei Ohtani baseball cards states that the box contains “10 packs and one parallel or short print card per box.” However, there are widespread consumer reports across social media that some boxes contain none or even up to six special cards!

We can help you protect your investment by detecting the presence of these guaranteed hits. If you’re interested in authenticating your collectibles using CT scanning consider emailing sales@industrialinspection.com.

Detecting Fake $30,000 Booster Box using CT Scanning

DETECTING FAKE EX HOLON PHANTOMS BOOSTER BOX USING CT SCANNING

DETECTING FAKE EX HOLON PHANTOMS BOOSTER BOX

Our client acquired a sealed Ex Holon Phantoms Booster Box valued at approximately $30,000. However, there were concerns about its authenticity, prompting the auction house from which it was purchased to request a third-party evaluation. As a result, the box was sent to us for a non-destructive review of its contents.

Below shows external box art differences between the suspect box compared to two matching boxes including this box break video and a public eBay listing.

A variety of metrics are used to evaluate the authenticity of booster boxes. This booster box fails every single one as shown in the below images. PokeKnowledge, who’s intelligence rivals that of Mewtwo’s, advised us during this evaluation. With all of the evidence presented he said, “If this booster box is real I’ll eat my hat.”

Below is a sample authentication report that each of our clients receives for authentication requests. Booster Box authentications cost just $225 – a worthwhile investment when spending so much for a prized collectible.

CT Scanning & Pre-Grading 1st Edition Charizards

CT SCANNING & PRE-GRADING
POKEMON 1ST EDITION BASE SET PACKS

CT SCANNING POKEMON 1ST EDITION BASE SET PACK

Not only can we scan and identify the contents of vintage Pokemon packs, like this Charizard within a 1st Edition Charizard Art Pack, but we can evaluate and pre-grade the card’s conditions including centering and corner roundness.

This first edition sealed Charizard’s upper right corner is not round like the upper left corner and would not grade as a 10. Per Beckett’s grading standards, “the corners of a trading card are one of the most critical factors in determining the card’s grade. The card should be free of dings, creases, bends, or discoloration. Cards with these flaws will receive a lower grade.”

Collector Card Case Scanning – Perfected

COLLECTOR CARD CASES

// PERFECTED

FLAWLESS

A single briefcase of Flawless requires about an hour of time to scan and identify the cards.

EMINENCE

An Eminence case requires about three hours of time to CT scan and identify the cards. We can read the cards and text on the metal bars.

TRANSCENDENT

A Transcendent case requires about two hours of time to image the single cards and uncut auto. The full card stacks at each end are not able to be scanned in a reasonable timeframe.

DYNASTY

Products like Dynasty Baseball & UEFA, which contain 5-6 packs or cards, require 1 to 2 hours to scan and identify each card.

Our mission is to provide cutting-edge engineering support solutions that empower our clients with accurate and actionable data. Each day our specialized and exceptionally qualified team is sought by industrial partners around the world to solve some of the most challenging tasks – like detecting specks of foreign object debris in aeronautical positioning systems or hairline fractures in ocean submersibles.

By chance we stumbled upon the ability to characterize features inside sealed collectible card containers – something we publicized as a typical [case study] on our website. Because we did not have a full understanding of the scope of the collectibles market, we believed the case study to be trivial, or at most a marketing tool for potential industrial markets (packaging manufacturers, metal 3D printing, coating application studies, and so on).

This [novel service offering] went viral in a matter of days, quickly and simultaneously producing intense social media critique and hundreds of requests by the common man and world-renowned brands alike. Interestingly, some of the most vocally opposed have had the audacity to request their own products be imaged. While every potential and actual client is covered under our quality management system NDA, readers should know just how pervasive this technological capability has become for the collectibles market. Our client base is global and covers all levels of the industry.

Michael Jordan Physical Card to CT Scan Comparison

Due to the ethical quandary of revealing the contents of sealed collectibles, we have also received requests for consultation from a variety of manufacturers and packaging firms. To satisfy this alternative demand, we have developed and filed a Provisional Patent Application regarding a new and extremely effective technology designed to mitigate the feasibility of CT scanning collectibles. Our hope is that this intellectual property is licensed or purchased so that we can exit this space and focus back toward more challenging and purpose-driven work. In the meantime, we will continue to make this technology accessible to all, work to expose exactly what can and can’t be imaged effectively, and investigate additional mitigation technologies.

IIC is partnering with industry manufacturers and sellers to produce and sell the worlds first CT scan certified, factory sealed, custom slabbed products. Each product will be assigned a unique serial number placed into a public database. The current certificate holder’s name would be attached to the serial number in a separate, private database. To prevent fraud, each transaction requires a new, supplemental certification under the existing serial number (Pack 1 will always be SN-001-1, but if resold would become SN-001-2.
